The red spruce tree is an elegant native evergreen tree that does well as windbreaks and in naturalizing. Red cedar was one of the most-logged trees in the 1800s and 1900s for its use with musical instruments, paper pulp and hardwood. This is one of the most important woodland trees for birds and wildlife and it’s now being grown as part of conservation efforts to regain its population level. Red spruce can be grown in sun or shade, but it does prefer soils that tend to be moist and rich. It's also a very popular specimen for bonsai.
